The Life West Bookstore has undergone a massive renovation. The bookstore is in the same location but the contents within are extremely different. The bookstore boasts new carpets, new clothing racks, new sections and best of all, many new products.
All of these massive upgrades have come about thanks to Michael Baldwin, Life West’s Campus Operations Manager. Michael Baldwin is committed to finding quality products that the community would enjoy. He even goes to different healthy living stores on the weekends to see what can be purchased and to qualify new vendors.
Michael talks through his journey in creating a bookstore that the entire Life West community would enjoy.
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about your background?
A: I’ve been in retail management operations for 16 years, and have worked with five major national retailers.
Q: What changes in the bookstore are you most proud of?
A: I’m most proud of the expanded assortment of products that students want, at affordable prices. We have doubled the size of health, wellness and nutritional books. Since the remodel, we have been bringing in more fitness and yoga equipment – plus essential oils and supplements.
Q: What would you like to do in the bookstore in the future?
A: We are bringing in more chiropractic tools – also, higher end chiropractic tools to appeal to local chiropractors. Once these higher end tools are purchased, we plan on sending out a direct mailing piece with a coupon code to local DCs. We also want to keep bringing in new categories. We’re bringing in a whole new greeting card and magazine selection.
Q: What do you love most about the Life West community?
A: Everyone is so happy here. The vibe just rubs off on you. I’ve lost 20 pounds! I think it’s from being surrounded by positive, health-conscious people every day. Everyone is so upbeat – it’s a great change of pace. Definitely nothing like any of my careers so far.
Q: How have you been so successful in stocking new products we love?
A: When students come into the bookstore and they’re talking amongst themselves, I like to listen for any gripes about what types of items we don’t offer so that I can go out and find those items. For instance, I recently went to a store that carried bone broth protein powder packets. I saw those and I instantly knew they would be a hit – so I added that store to our vendor list.
Through the dedicated efforts of Life West’s Campus Operations Manager, the Life West Bookstore has become a place where students, DCs, faculty and staff can purchase products that they care about.
Under Michael’s leadership, the Life West Bookstore will continue to flourish through the years to come. This renovation will be a valuable part of Life West history and the Life West community is excited to see how the journey unfolds.
