Get a feel for The WAVE in videos showcasing last big event

Videos from The WAVE, Life Chiropractic College West’s annual chiropractic event that brings doctors, students and visionaries from around the world to the Bay Area each August, are available on Life West’s YouTube channel, and The WAVE website has registration information and more on it. If you’re saving the date but waiting to see what The WAVE offers this year, now is the time to revisit what’s so special about this conference. Watch industry-renowned professionals, learning sessions, and get a look at Chiro Community events that have included a Block Party, a VIP Lounge, Alumni Events and a Mentor Meet-Up in the past.

Speakers enlighten, encourage and enthuse

At last year’s event, Dr. Jeanne Ohm, of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), discussed salutogenesis, a term that focuses on factors that support human health and well-being. According to Dr. Ohm, “Salutogenesis is that which gives birth to health; the opposite of pathogenesis which is suffering. The salutogenesis model is a friendly universe, and chiropractic is a friendly universe. We have the opportunity to choose minute to minute whether we’re going to live in that friendly universe or that hostile one. The choice is yours.” You’ll be hearing a lot more about salutogenesis at The WAVE 2019. Get your preview here if you missed this introduction in 2018.

The WAVE 2018 was also honored by the presence of double amputee Amy Purdy. Purdy explained how embracing the chiropractic ideal of optimal potential allowed her to triumph over illness and disability, becoming a three-time Paralympic snowboarding medalist, a “Dancing with the Stars” runner-up, an author, actress and designer. She concluded her speech with this statement, “So the thought that I’d like to leave with you all tonight is maybe instead of looking at all of our challenges and all of our obstacles as something that is negative or bad, maybe we can look at them as blessings—as these magnificent little gifts that can be used to ignite our imaginations and help us go further than we ever knew we could go.”

There are plenty of little gifts throughout the videos on the playlist. Watch for these speakers as you peruse them.

Dr. Ramneek Bhogal told the audience, “Our position on technique is that techniques are tools. Reach for the right tool. The right tool for the job.”

Dr. Dan Murphy remarked, “Proprioception is what chiropractic has always done. But increasingly, they’re realizing proprioception is intimately coupled with the 7th sense – how the brain controls immunity.”

Dr. Mary Lucus-Flannery, Life West’s Dean of Enrollment, took the stage, stating, “You are on this incredible journey and you have everything you need inside of you. All of the talents, all of the gifts. You have so much to offer the world. Chiropractic is a love story on many levels because of compassion—that is our greatest gift. When you’re with someone and they’re in some kind of struggle, and you’re saying, like, ‘I see you.’ Compassion is when you go from ‘I get it’ to ‘I’m in it with you’.”

Following that discussion, Dr. Derrell Blackburn said, “I’m in it with you if I deliver a chiropractic adjustment to facilitate the removal of that which is interfering with something that is perfect. Will the nervous system be functioning better? I want you all to know in here, and I want everybody in your office to know—you are enough. It’s not cliché. It’s not philosophy. It’s science.”

Life West Student Laura Zelko also stated, “If every single person on the planet is going to get adjusted, and billions of people can’t afford care as it is—millions just in this country—then how exactly are we going to achieve that goal? I’m not afraid of being alone or made fun of. I’m not even afraid of charging a high fee if that fits the demographics in the psychology of my ideal patient. The only thing I’m really afraid of is not living up to my values.”

Life West Student Anthony Schuller excitedly told the participants, “I wanted to learn more about chiropractic. That adjustment. About assessing a subluxation—finding it in its various ways and how to actually address it in all the many ways that we can as chiropractors.” He concluded with, “So, I just want to let you know like this…this is what this is meant to be, to be at Life West—to really discover what it is to be a doctor of chiropractic.”

Diverse panel talks about making connections

Another topic at The WAVE 2018 was diversity and inclusion. A special panel discussed why diversity and inclusion are so important to the chiropractic profession.

The panel members rallied together, defining diversity and inclusion as everything from the age, gender, personality, and socio-economics of each individual. Several conference speakers weighed in on the subject throughout the event, with one stating, “One of the biggest things that we always talk about is being one. The only way that we can truly be one is if as humans, mankind, humanity—if all of us are getting this lesson, this connection from above, down, inside and out. I mean, these are the things and everybody’s going to benefit.” Panel member and Life West student Kristan Cassady said during the diversity and inclusion presentation that “What we want do by creating inclusion is look at some of those communities that have been unheard.” Dr. Blackburn remarked in another presentation, “It’s extremely clear to fundamentalists that diversity is not only important. Diversity is not only vital. Without diversity we’re actually threatening the idea of our existence. And that matters to me because it threatens the existence of this profession that changed my life.”

President Ron Oberstein also gave some important Life West statistics. “In the spring quarter, we had 75% women in that class that came in. And I’m keeping score because I want you to win. Because you know why? Women are the true healers of the world.”

Life West president sums it up

Dr. Oberstein took the stage frequently. In one presentation, he said emphatically, “Life West has to do the work with our actions and by creating a lasting and meaningful legacy. So, how about the future? What’s the vision look like? And how will we create a healthier world? That’s really what we’re about. We always have to begin with our ‘Why.’ You can be the greatest artist in the world, you can know the most amount of science in the world, but if you don’t know ‘why’ you wake up in the morning every single day, excited to do what we do, then we got to get to the ‘why’. And our students are walking out with the ‘Why.’”

Proud of his campus, his students’ work and mission, President Oberstein also said, “Our students are so dedicated, they’re so principled, and they’re so demanding at times. But…they should be—because in life, the only way you get something is if you ask for it. These are the people that make Life West tick. These are the ones that show up every day. This is the future of chiropractic, right here. These women and men will make a huge difference in this world. These women and men will be in your town, they’ll be in your office, possibly. These women and men will be the ones who come in, that you groom to take over. So, rest assured, I promise you this, from above, down, and from the inside-out, Life West is making a difference and will continue to make a difference. It’s not me. It’s them.”
