Life West women’s rugby heads to Colorado this weekend in search of the program’s fourth consecutive national championship. The Gladiatrix will compete in the Women’s Premier League playoffs, which kicks off Friday afternoon with a semifinal matchup against New York Rugby at Infinity Park in Glendale, near Denver.
This trip is the final competition of the Gladiatrix’s first season in the WPL, where the squad has risen to the top of the West Conference. Under the guidance of first-year head coach Dev Ferris, Life West went 7-1 during the eight-game season and outscored rivals by a combined score of 332-138. The Gladiatrix have been led by Sisileti Hingano, whose 91 points pace the squad, as well as Amy Naber-Bonte and Hope Rogers, who have tallied 40 points apiece.
While the team split its two games with the Glendale Merlins, Life West earned the West Conference’s No. 1 seed by virtue of its 194-point differential against its opponents. This set up Life West to take on East Conference No. 2 seed New York Rugby, which finished the 2019 campaign with a 5-3 overall record. After a 2-3 start to the season, New York reeled off three consecutive wins, including a 32-12 triumph over Beantown Rugby on the last day of the season that clinched a playoff berth.
The contest will take place at 3:30 pm Mountain time, and the winning team will advance to Sunday afternoon’s championship game. Their opponents will be either the top-seeded Atlanta Harlequins, who went 7-1 in the East Conference, or the home-standing Merlins, who dropped a 43-21 decision to Life West in August before topping the Gladiatrix 31-29 in September.
If you’re unable to make it to the Rockies for this weekend’s action, you can watch live video through FloRugby, which will have coverage of each game of the tournament. Additionally, Life West’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram platforms will have photos, videos and updates from Glendale all weekend long.
