What the CARES Act Means for You

On March 27, President Trump signed the CARES Act, which was designed to provide relief for those repaying student loans in the current societal situation. This legislation affects millions of people, including those who relied on federal aid during the course of their chiropractic education.

Federal student loan payments will automatically stop through the month of September, and interest rates have been lowered to 0% during this time. These measures are designed to ease financial burdens during the challenging times we’re living in, but it is important to note that you can still make full or partial payments on your loans if you’d like to do so. Contact your loan servicer to opt out of the administrative forbearance and resume your payment schedule, or to inquire about making partial payments during this period.

This forbearance and the 0% interest rate are both scheduled to end on Wednesday, Sept. 30. Your loan servicer will contact you no later than August to remind you of an upcoming resumption to your payment schedule. You’ll want to make sure you have your correct, up-to-date contact information on file with your loan servicer as soon as possible.

For more information on the CARES Act, including answers to frequently asked questions, visit the Federal Student Aid website.
