Life West men’s rugby sweeps twin bill; women fall to Berkeley

Rugby season is already in full swing, and three of Life West’s four teams were in action Saturday in Northern California’s Bay Area. Ahead of the Pacific Rugby Premiership season, which begins on Feb. 8, the men’s D2 and D3 teams played a doubleheader at San Jose High School, while the women hosted a contest at Bodnar Field on the California Maritime Academy campus in Vallejo, California.

Life West men’s rugby swept San Jose on Saturday.

The Life West men’s teams swept Saturday’s twin bill against the home-standing San Jose Seahawks. The D2 squad earned its first win of the season with a 54-6 victory, while the D3 unit rolled to a 126-3 romp to improve to 2-0 in 2020. With PRP play kicking off next weekend, the D2 and D3 teams will return to action in a pair of road games scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 15. The D2 squad heads to Santa Rosa, while Life West’s D3 team squares off with the Bay Area Baracus Rugby Club in San Francisco.

Life West women’s rugby, meanwhile, had a rough go of it in their matchup with the Berkeley All Blues. Berkeley scored the first 22 points of the game and recorded a 46-5 triumph, which dropped Life West to a 0-2 record in the young season. Danielle Ioramo scored Life West’s lone try of the contest at the 51-minute mark, and the game saw plenty of the program’s newer players earn valuable on-field experience.

Saturday’s PRP lid-lifter is part of a home doubleheader that begins at 1 pm. The men, winners of the PRP title a season ago, will play host to the visiting Glendale Merlins, while the women welcome the San Jose Seahawks. Both contests will be played at Bodnar Field.
