Life West rugby teams prep for regional qualifiers Saturday

Saturday is a big day for Life Chiropractic College West’s men’s and women’s rugby teams, as the “7s” squads will participate in regional qualifying tournaments for the USA Rugby Club 7s National Championship. The Gladiators and Gladiatrix will have a home-field advantage for the event, which will take place at Ray Sheeran Field on Treasure Island.

Life West’s rugby squads are looking to add to a strong summer season Saturday at Treasure Island.

One of Life West’s two men’s teams (the “White” team) has already qualified for the national championship, which will be contested Aug. 10-11 in Kansas City, Missouri. They will face Olympic Club and the Westside Ronins in preliminary-round contests at 10:20 am and 11:40 am. The other squad (the “Blue” team) will play the Sacramento Capitals and Washington Athletic Club at 9:20 am and 12 pm.

With the White team already assured of a spot, Saturday’s regional qualifying tournament will send two additional men’s teams to nationals. If the White team is in the top three of five participating teams, the Blue team must also finish in the top three. If not, the Blue team must finish in the top two.

The women, meanwhile, are part of a five-team round robin tournament where the top three groups will move on. The Gladiatrix will play at 9:40 am, 11:20 am, 12:40 pm and 4 pm.

It has been a fruitful 7s season for both the Gladiators and Gladiatrix. In addition to one of the men’s teams locking up a spot in the national tournament early, both the men and women won the Northern California Rugby Football Union tournaments, which were held earlier this month in San Jose. Furthermore, the Life West women prevailed in the Santa Barbara “Sevens by the Sea” tournament as well.

The National Championship will be held at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, and it doubles as the 40th anniversary of the first such event. Tickets are on sale now.
