Men win Pacific Rugby Premiership title, head to national semifinals

Life West men’s rugby avenged its only two losses of the season last weekend, and in doing so secured a spot in the national semifinals.

The Gladiators rallied from a halftime deficit against Belmont Shore on Saturday at Treasure Island, ultimately winning the Pacific Rugby Premiership final by a score of 36-27. Belmont Shore had prevailed in the two prior meetings between the clubs this season, but Life West took this victory last weekend and is now one of just four teams from around the country remaining in the USA Rugby Men’s Division I playoffs.

Next up for Life West, now 9-2 in the 2019 campaign, is a trip to Austin, Texas, for a national semifinal on May 18 against the Austin Blacks. The Blacks are 10-0 this season and have outscored their prior opponents by a margin of 722-136.

The game will take place at 5 p.m. Central time at Burr Field, which is one of the first rugby-specific sites in the United States. The winner of that contest earns a spot in the national final against either the Chicago Lions or the Life Running Eagles. That contest is scheduled for June 1 at Fortress Obetz in Obetz, Ohio (just outside Columbus).
