The WAVE 2018: Recap

Chiropractic doctors from around the world gathered in Oakland, Calif., for the eighth annual WAVE chiropractic conference. This year, the attendees explored chiropractic sessions and events with the conference theme “Optimal Potential.” Take a look at how speakers brought their “A” game and made connections.

Paralympic Snowboarder Amy Purdy Lights Up the Stage

Keynote speaker Amy Purdy, a double amputee, added to the inspiration of The WAVE as she told her story of triumph over illness and disability. Purdy is a three-time Paralympic snowboarding medalist, “Dancing with the Stars” runner-up, author, actress and a designer. Life West President Dr. Ron Oberstein interviews Amy in this video, along with fellow amputee and keynote speaker Dr. Liz Anderson-Peacock.

“The borders and the obstacles in our lives can only do two things: one, stop us dead in our tracks, or two, cause us to get creative.”

– Amy Purdy

Amy talks about embracing the chiropractic ideal of optimal potential and how she has made living her best life an important everyday choice.

Oakland Dr. Willard Smith Honored at The WAVE

Oakland-based chiropractor Dr. Willard Smith received the 2018 Service to Humanity Award at The WAVE conference. Life West’s Dr. Oberstein said Dr. Smith was recognized for his perseverance and breakthrough of representing African-Americans in the chiropractic profession. His recognition was part of the theme of diversity and inclusion throughout the conference. Read more, including quotes from his son, who accepted the award for him.

Growing up Asian American people asked me where I was from. The answer Redding was not good enough even though I am a first generation american. What they meant was what was my ethnicity, what was the country or origin my parents immigrated from. The moment this man started speaking at the seminar today I started bawling my eyes out. For once there was someone who looked like me that spoke the words ive been holding back for 24 years. His story touched my soul and Lee Mun Wah was my favorite speaker. I dont share this fact about Scarletts name a lot but the reason why I choose to keep her first name relatively white was so she could have the best shot at life. Ive been told ethnic names on resumes get tossed aside. Because of this I choose to have her first name be her white name. If you guys dont know who Lee Mun Wah is google him. Listen to his story. Trust me you wont regret it. Open up the conversation about race, as the uncomfortable questions and be proud of your roots. Hi Im Moung and Im a first generation asian american. Im damn proud of it. #lifewestwave @lifewestwave #leemunwah #chiropractic #inspo celebratediversity
