Philosophy embracing Salutogenic model leads at The WAVE

Life Chiropractic College West’s annual chiropractic conference, The WAVE, is quickly approaching, and this year’s August event is sure to deliver a large dose of philosophical discussion to mull over and adapt.

The 2019 theme, “The Science, Philosophy and Art of Chiropractic: The Salutogenic Model,” dissects Salutogenesis, which literally means “the creation of health,” and how chiropractic fits within that model. Speakers at The WAVE that fall under the Philosophy track come from all over the world and will cover a variety of topics underneath this umbrella.

Lona Cook, DC: Dr. Cook is an author and a frequent speaker on chiropractic. She has a passion for Vitalistic chiropractic, which fits within the Salutogenic model, and will discuss how that cutting-edge philosophy can be applied to our life experience–both the inner world, where we reflect on our own experience and growth, and also our outer world, where chiropractors can take on the role of facilitators. Her presentation is “ADIO–Seeing the Intelligence in Everything!”

Peter Kevorkian, DC: The President of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, Dr. Kevorkian teaches internationally about chiropractic philosophy. He is on the board of the Massachusetts Chiropractic Society and hosts the Massachusetts Alliance for Chiropractic Philosophy. In his talk at The WAVE, he’ll redefine health care using the Salutogenic model. Participants will learn how to support vitality within a Salutogenic model while practicing in a pathogenic culture. His topic is “Redefining Health Care for the 21st Century: Salutogenisis – Vitalism – Healing.”

Marc Hudson, DC: Dr. Hudson, who practices in Mallorca, Spain, and founded the Barcelona College of Chiropractic, will talk about what makes chiropractic work, and how chiropractors can increase results. The title of his discussion is “The Mechanism-Vitalism Continuum.”

Jimmy Nanda, DC: As Chairman of the Life West Board of Regents, Regional Director of the International Chiropractors Association, and a founding member of the Indian Association of Chiropractic Doctors, Dr. Nanda is very familiar with Life West’s initiative to serve and care for under-served populations. In his talk, he’ll discuss the opportunity he sees to dramatically increase health outcomes in a low-income, medically underserved population. Lessons learned can improve health care services and outcomes in our own practices and communities at home. His topic is “Chiropractic in India: Challenges, Opportunities & Lessons for US Chiropractors.”

Jeanne Ohm, DC: Dr. Ohm is the Chief Executive Officer of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) and a member of the Life West Board of Regents. Her talk will focus on how families can benefit from a Salutogenic approach in practice. Her presentation is titled “The Head, Heart and Hands of Salutogenesis in the Family Practice.”

Those attending presentations at The WAVE, which will be held at the Oakland Marriott City Center in Oakland, California from Aug. 16-18, are eligible to earn Continuing Education CE) hours in categories such as technique, nutrition and basic science. The three-day event features speakers devoted to the science, philosophy and art of chiropractic. Registration is easy at lifewestwave.com.

More than 20 speakers from across the chiropractic industry have been confirmed for the conference. For more on the speakers and what they’ll bring to the Bay Area this summer, follow The WAVE on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
