Chiropractic care is a healing art based on the principle that the body can heal itself when the spine is properly aligned. The history of chiropractic reflects the vision, determination, and innovation of its founders.
Life Chiropractic College West honors this legacy by training the next generation of chiropractors and serving communities with dedication and expertise.
Chiropractic care began with the vision of Daniel David Palmer in 1895. Palmer, a magnetic healer, performed the first chiropractic adjustment on a patient named Harvey Lillard, restoring his hearing.
This event marked the birth of chiropractic as a distinct health care discipline. Palmer’s philosophy emphasized the body’s innate ability to heal itself when the spine is in alignment, a principle that remains central to chiropractic practice today.

Chiropractic care began in 1897 when Daniel David Palmer opened the first school dedicated to teaching chiropractic principles and spinal health in Davenport, Iowa. His approach emphasized the relationship between the spine and overall well-being. Palmer’s teachings established the foundation for modern chiropractic education and practice.
His work inspired many individuals to pursue chiropractic as a profession. This momentum led to the growth of chiropractic colleges throughout the United States.
In the early 20th century, chiropractic faced challenges as it sought recognition within the broader medical community. Despite opposition, chiropractic colleges expanded, and the profession gained acceptance.
The establishment of licensing laws in various states helped legitimize chiropractic care. Over time, chiropractic developed into a respected health care discipline, with practitioners focusing on spinal health and its impact on the nervous system.
The 20th century brought important developments in chiropractic care. Research on spinal subluxations and their impact on health expanded the understanding of chiropractic principles. Legal and political challenges tested the profession, yet it continued to grow.
Chiropractic organizations focused on establishing educational standards. They also promoted research, which strengthened credibility and increased acceptance within the health care system.
Today, chiropractic care integrates advanced diagnostic tools and evidence-based practices. Research continues to highlight its effectiveness in addressing a wide range of musculoskeletal and neurological issues. They help patients improve mobility, function, and overall well-being.
Chiropractors work alongside other health care professionals to deliver comprehensive care. The integration of chiropractic into mainstream health care reflects its recognized value in promoting overall health and wellness.
