Help Life West fund three new alumni scholarships

Life Chiropractic College West is working to raise $25,000 by the end of the year to fund three new alumni scholarships.

The Hayward, California college campus has been mounting an end-of-the-year fundraising campaign to fund the scholarships, which will be awarded at the Alumni Luncheon during The WAVE 2019, Life West’s annual conference. This year’s conference will be held in Oakland, California from Aug. 16-18, 2019.

The new alumni scholarships honor longstanding teachers and administrators at Life West:

  • The Jim Hawkins Scholarship will honor academic excellence in the basic sciences. Read more about Hawkins and his time at the college in this post, “New chapter begins for longtime Life West professor.”
  • The Jackie Biron Scholarship, named for the Director of Student Life who many students know as “Mamma Jackie,” will honor student leadership and students who demonstrate commitment to and involvement with community service. Read more about Jackie Biron’s time at Life West in “Mamma Jackie journeys from temporary employee to LW leader.”
  • The Nancy McKillican Scholarship will acknowledge chiropractic philosophy. Nancy, a longtime cheerleader for chiropractic and the former Alumni Coordinator, passed away in February 2018. Read about her in “Life West mourns the loss of Nancy McKillican.”

You can find links to donate directly to each of the alumni scholarships on the Life West website. Any tax-deductible donation made by Dec. 31 will count toward the Life West goal of raising $25,000 to fully fund the alumni scholarships for the next year.

Alumni scholarships in the names of Jim Hawkins, from left, Nancy McKillican and Jackie Biron will be awarded in August 2019.

Hawkins, who is retiring after teaching for 40 years at Life West, is also a dedicated member of the President’s Circle. He has committed to enrolling 40 new members to that society of benefactors.

Former Life West President Dr. Gerry Clum called him “Life West’s most senior faculty member and one of its most beloved, cherished and revered teachers” in a recent Facebook post.

In a letter to Life West alumni, Hawkins said, “To all of you who share my passion for this critical idea—we must support the continued development of doctors who will create this future—A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR HUMANITY. I urge you to join me and the other members of the President’s Circle who have pledged their continued support of this essential mission. Please do not wait—donate today.” Want to be one those 40 new members? Enroll today in the President’s Circle.

In a recent issue of Lifelines, a student magazine at Life West, Biron was praised for commitment to the school in 20 years of service here. Outgoing editor Sean de Lima Thiel called her a “shining example of our Lasting Purpose” and thanked her for being a champion for the students.

McKillican is remembered in a recent issue of Life Styles magazine, the Life West alumni magazine. She worked at Life West from 2013 to early 2018 as the Alumni Coordinator. Mary Lucas-Flannery, the Dean of Enrollment at Life West, writes: “Togetherness was Nancy’s gift to all of us. She included us. She connected us. She loved each of us individually and took the time to know us.”
