The horrific recent racial attacks against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) happening across the country have influenced the D&I conversations on campus. We must stand in solidarity with the Asian community in calling for an end to this violence. Secondly, Derek Chauvin’s trial, the police officer responsible for George Floyd’s death, is underway and sending shock waves through the black community. The use of force by police – especially against black and brown men – is as much on trial as is Chauvin.
Life Chiropractic College West is taking steps to create a stronger presence online to create a safe space for addressing issues such as this and provide necessary resources to the campus community. For this purpose, the Diversity and Inclusion Network (DIN), an online college-wide network and repository that provides a platform for increasing knowledge and awareness of diversity, equity, and inclusion, have started a conversation against racial hatred and violence in the (DIN) Forum. We encourage students, faculty, and staff, and the community to join in this conversation. Please help us spread the word so as many people as possible can take advantage of this resource. Read more.
These incidents are traumatic and contribute to an increase in fear, stress, anxiety, and psychological trauma, reinforcing a need for increased mental health support.
The JED Foundation strongly condemns racism, xenophobia, and bias-motivated violence of any kind and has recently created mental health and anti-racism resources to support the AAPI communities.
